I stared at Lino, my mouth open, then turned slowly towards Elain.

She didn’t have time to say anything. Leprechauns from the bank pushed open the main door. They waved their cups in the air, clamouring for Irish coffee.

“No! Don’t refill their cups!”

All the leprechauns stared at me, mouths agape in shock.

“I mean, if you turn in your cups, we’ll provide a free Irish coffee today.” That was the best I could think of in the heat of the moment. Giving away free coffee was better than ruining our reputation by letting Trill’s enchantment ruin our coffee.

A pixie flew in right behind the bankers. “Will you do that for caramel tornados too?”

“Of course,” I said with a smile. A day with no coffee income. Oh joy! I hoped our clients made up for the freebie by purchasing pastries.

“Oh dear, Cariad. That’s a lot of coffee.” Aunt Rose bustled out of the kitchen. Her magic spectacles hung from a chain down on her chest atop her pink apron. She smiled at me, then stared at Trill.

“I… um… I will purchase the drinks to offset the cost, if you return the cups to me.”

“I will ask my sister to send them to your café, Mr Trill.” Aunt Rose hadn’t taken her eyes off him. Though a sly smile was tugging at her face. “She’ll want to investigate the spell on them. Attempting to ruin a Dymestl family business through magical deceit is not a matter I nor my sister take lightly.”

“Oh! The Dymestl death stare,” Elain whispered loud enough for those in the café to hear. Everyone in line for coffee was instantly quiet. “Few who receive it live to see the world outside of a dungeon cell.”

Trilby swallowed hard and tugged at the collar of his shirt, then pulled his wand from his sleeve. “Um… well… here. I shall pay for two hundred of your lattes. We gave out just over that number of cups yesterday. We can settle the tab this evening after you’ve run your tally. I shall be happy to pay any overage you incur beyond that.”

Aunt Rose gave him a curt nod. “I will let my sister know you’ve taken steps to set your accounts right. Holly will ring you out.”

“Send Mia out with a bin to toss the cups into,” I asked Aunt Rose and headed behind the espresso machine to help Nia. I glanced up at Elain. “Can you help run the bins back and forth to the kitchen so those mugs don’t get back into circulation?”

She pointed at Punkin. “Have him do his pwca short-teleport and store them in the basement. We can spell lock the door so only staff can open it.”

“I’m on it!” Punkin jumped from the table and darted into the kitchen to help Mia locate a bin he could manage.

By now the line of our morning regulars was out the door. The word of Trill purchasing drinks here for anyone turning in their Decadence-branded cup was the conversation throughout the line.
